Bizzare Search Terms: 2011 Edition

So now that I’m back in the fold I’ve been watching some of the things that random people search for that bring them to State of Affairs.  A while back, my former partner-in-crime Alex James wrote about this very same topic.  I’ve been looking through the archives and there’s some even stranger stuff, 2 years later.

Killzone 2 Ads Pulled From Toronto Bus Shelters

31 Mar

From Toronto Star:

About 300 Toronto bus shelter ads for a violent video game are coming down ahead of schedule [last] week after complaints surfaced about its images of war and violence.

Teacher Davis Mirza emailed Sony Canada, which makes PlayStation games, after seeing an ad for Killzone 2 in the bus shelter near his Scarborough school.

“My kids, who come from a lot of different countries, who have to experience violence, who basically come here to seek shelter and safety, that’s the stuff they don’t need to see,” said the Grade 4/5 teacher at Pauline Johnson Junior Public School, near Birchmount Rd. and Sheppard Ave. E.

The central image in the ad is a “menacing head with glowing eyes,” wearing a mask with a breathing tube,, Mirza said.

This is what they are talking about:

What I want to know is what country has the money and technology to put soldiers like this in the battlefield.  How does this look anything like a modern day soldier? Here’s what a real soldier looks like:

Yeah, that totally looks like a dude with glowing eyes and a breathing apparatus.  The closest a real soldier would get to looking like one of these computer generated dudes would be putting on some night vision goggles and a gas mask.

But wait, here’s the real reason why they’re pulling the ads:

“I don’t think that when you’re in Scarborough, where we’re having to deal on a constant basis with violence, that does anything to help promote any kind of community renewal or even responsibility,” he said.

So basically you’re telling me that the people of your community are too stupid to know the difference between real war and a video game? This is completely obtuse. People should be more focused on curbing gun crime than worrying about how Sony advertises it’s products. While we’re at it, why don’t we pull down every single Victoria Secret ad from the city, because you know, there’s rapists out there and they might get mixed messages about how we feel about them.

A block away from my work, there’s a clothing store that uses a woman that is completely naked as their poster girl.  They only thing covering her up is a cowboy hat, boots and her breast-length hair.  Is this considered faux pas? Hell no.  If you’re allowed to have as much violence as you want in movies and TV but nudity is taboo, then why is an ad from a video game getting so much attention and the store down the street from me isn’t?

So what does Sony do to address these idiotic people?

Sony had decided to pull the entire Killzone bus shelter campaign.

That my friends is why this society is doomed to mediocrity.
