MILLARD, Neb. — A Millard mother said she’s upset by a comic book that she considers sexually explicit that is in her son’s elementary school library.
The comic is part of a popular new series about Spider-Man and the head librarian of the Millard School District said it’s been in high demand.
“My son looked at this and goes, ‘Ohhhh!'” said Physha Svendsen.
She said the book that her 6-year-old son brought home is not age-appropriate for Norris Elementary School students and wants it removed from the library.
“It has a lot of sexual undertones in here, as far as sexuality goes,” she said. “They can learn this through any other place, but it’s not something I allow them to learn, in my house at least.”
Svendsen said she’s actively involved with her four children’s educations and said comic books like the one in question hold little literary value. She said she’s especially concerned about her 6-year-old son, who’s still developing reading skills.
Svendesen didn’t elaborate on the book’s literary elements that she found sexually inappropriate. Some illustrations in the book showed a female character wearing a bikini and a short skirt.
Okay. This is Spider-Man we’re talking about, right? Not some dirty magazines the kid’s step father left lying around? Just want to make sure. So seriously, Spider-Man? Spider-Man is one of the most wholesome comic book characters out there, with no moral ambiguity whatsoever.
Let’s just break down her argument, for Spidy’s sake:
1) “They can learn this through any other place, but it’s not something I allow them to learn, in my house at least.”
So basically she’s saying that she’s a lazy parent and instead of actually teaching her kids about the world around them, she’d rather have other people tell them what’s what. I do recall this is the same kind of parenting skills used to bring up the Columbine Killers. Teaching your children about the world is part of your job as a parent. When you don’t do this, 9 times out of 10 they end up on the (metaphoric or literal) pole. This argument just screams ignorance. What do you allow them to learn in the house, that being gay is a sin and abortion doctors should be killed? As long as the good book teaches it, then it’s five-by-five. It doesn’t even matter if you’re a true believer, this is just stupid parenting. Plain and simple.
2) Svendesen didn’t elaborate on the book’s literary elements that she found sexually inappropriate.
That’s because she can’t. It’s SPIDER-MAN. This sounds like a case of a lonely woman looking for attention because she’s bored and lonely. Just because you see some hand drawn navel, it doesn’t mean Stan Lee’s coming on to your kid.
3) The kid is 6 years old.
You know what, when I was 6 years old, I was watching G.I. Joe slaughtering Cobra every weekend, He-Man was impaling people with his big ass sword, and I cried when Optimus Prime died. I was learning life lessons about life and death. I also was reading Hardy Boy books. If this kid can’t read a comic book, then he’s got bigger problems than seeing a chick in a mini-skirt.
So what does this woman do instead of teaching her kid about life? She makes a big fuss to the school and tries to get Spidy pulled from the shelves. Lady, I don’t think you realize what you’re doing. There’s going to be a lot of pissed off 12 year olds with pitch forks and torches on your lawn if you squash their Spider-Man.
Do the world a favour, think before you freak out.
