$50 billion dollars people. That’s how much our province is trying to squeeze out of Big Tobacco. Apparently smoking-related deaths are taking its toll on the health system, and the Ontario government wants reparations.
I’m really kind of amazed that anyone would even try to do this. Considering the fact cigarettes are heavily taxed and covered up at all connivence stores, the government of Ontario is really going out of their way this time.
I don’t know about you, but I can already see this as a massive failure and a waste of tax payers money. If you’ve ever seen Thank You For Smoking, it’s going to go something like this: (you might want to skip ahead a few minutes)
Cigarette companies spend millions each year to make sure they can keep selling cigarettes. Does the government of Ontario really think they have a chance in hell in getting all or any of this money? I highly doubt it.
Now, I would love for this government to do something responsible for once, but it’s not going to start here.
